What are ladders?Ladders can be thought of as seasons. Characters who opt in during character creation are tied to the current ladder. After a designated period of time, that ladder ends, those characters are no longer playable, and a new ladder begins. Games with ladders often have ladder leaderboards as well as increased experience or drops for ladder characters. Often, ladder characters are on entirely different servers but, for RSCL, it's not unreasonable to simply block trading and dropping items between ladder and non-ladder characters.
Why ladders? As has been shown in many successful games, ladders solve two problems. These two problems just so happen to that plague RSC private servers:1) Old players getting bored. They've maxed the easy skills, made a bunch of money, have all the common pures/stakers. Ladders give these players a reason to keep playing.2) New players join and are met with a mature player base. Every skill already has someone with 99, everyone is geared, and they can't compete economically with these established players. Ladders give these players a chance to race to 99, the chance to compete, the chance to win notoriety and vanity items.
Some example ladder scenarios:50x experience, lasts one week, and offer a unique cape to the person with the highest total skill level at the end of the event. 30x experience, lasts until someone reaches 99 smithing, and the winner is rewarded with 50% of the experience they mined, applicable to eligible skills1x experience, lasts until someone kills a kbd, winner awarded party hat

This is kind of like little tournaments. Sounds fun
